Once again, Canadians had great success at the CBTU International Convention held in Detroit in May, 2010. Congratulations to our CBTU Chapter President Janice Gairey on her re-election to the CBTU National Board, and to Christopher Wilson for being newly elected to the National Board! Keynote Speaker Christopher Wilson greeted the CBTU International Convention on behalf of our chapter.

Haiti, I Love You

It’s now been one month since the most tragic events to hit my beautiful island of Haiti. All Haitians in the world are mourning. Even though I was not born or even raised there, Haiti flows in my veins and in my heart. The last month has been hard for me knowing that I was there, on vacation for the holidays, 2 weeks prior to the events and knowing that I’ve lost friends, family members and people that I will never be able to see again. However, I console myself by knowing that the last memories of them were joyful.

Being where I am right now, I feel completely useless, I should be there with my brothers, my sisters to help them rebuilt, to heal the sick, to feed the poor. However, the circumstances do not allow me to do so at this moment. For who ever can help and have been helping, I thank you.

Please remember once thing, even though monumental places, artifacts, houses were completely destroyed by the earthquake, rest assured that the love and passion of the Haitians was not destroyed.

We thank God for the gift of life and we will always remember the ones that we’ve lost.

Mother’s Day Brunch

Moms, do you like your eggs scrambled or over-easy?

The CBTU is hosting a Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday May 9 2010 from 11am to 2pm at the OFL 15 Gervais Drive lower level. Tickets are $15.00 per person. Brunch will satisfy your soul and tummy, with delights such as hash browns ,eggs , sausages, bacon (chicken or turkey), muffins croissants, and assorted beverages. Please contact the CBTU for tickets.

Wishing everyone had a safe healthy and happy holiday and see you in the New Year. Here are the general membership meeting dates for the upcoming year including the National Convention(Detroit) in May 2010.

No meetings will be cancelled and agendas prior to the meetings will be circulated. We need you to respond to let us know out of courtesy if you will be attending. In order for us to organize the number of resources and refreshments.

Unfortunately, the CBTU New Year’s Eve Gala had to be cancelled due to a low response. We would like to thank those that showed their support to the event, and hope to celebrate with all members in the new year.

CBTU Award Dinner and Dance a Success!

The CBTU Awards Dinner and Dance held November 14th in Toronto was a tremendous success. Keynote speaker, Christopher Wilson from PSAC, made a riviting speech to the crowd entitled ” The Party is Over”, speaking to his vision of the role of the labour movement with respect to community building.

What would an awards ceremony be without… awards! The following are the recipients of the awards and scholarships presented during the course of the evening.

Ann Newman Scholarship:

Nathalia McCormack is attending her first year at the University of Guelph Humber in the Criminal Justice Program. She Graduated from Ascension of Our Lord Secondary School in Mississauga, aspires to be in Law Enforcement

Bromley Armstrong Service Award:

Veronica Morgan is a long time United Steeleworkers member

Jack White Humanitarian Award:

Aileen Duncan, Vice President of the PSAC Retirees Association (Ontario Division)

June Veecock Leadership Award:

Canadian Humanitarian Appeal for Relief of Tamils
