The CBTU is hosting a Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday May 9 2010 from 11am to 2pm at the OFL 15 Gervais Drive lower level. Tickets are $15.00 per person. Brunch will satisfy your soul and tummy, with delights such as hash browns ,eggs , sausages, bacon (chicken or turkey), muffins croissants, and assorted beverages. Please contact the CBTU for tickets.

ANN NEWMAN YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

APPLICATION FOR CONSIDERATION

PURPOSE:

This Fund was established to provide partial scholarships to members of CBTU Ontario Chapter, their children, grandchildren or family members or youth in the Black community pursuing a post-secondary education.

ELIGIBLITY:

Any student who has graduated or will be graduating from an Ontario High School or an equivalent program and who will be or is attending a recognized post-secondary institution such as a college or university, and is a member, child or grandchild of a CBTU member in good standing, or a family member or youth in the Black community, is eligible to apply for consideration.

AWARD:

One scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to the successful applicant as chosen by the Fund’s Selection Committee. The scholarship will be $1,000. In the event that two applicants are equally qualified, two scholarships will be awarded at $500.00 each.

CRITERIA:

The Fund’s Selection Committee will review all applications received for consideration. Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Fund’s Selection Committee which will consider the following criteria:

• Essay submission – 500 words. Topic: Why is there a need for an organization like CBTU and how will you as a recipient support the organization’s mission?
• Involvement in community activities including: multi-cultural, religious, athletic and any other organizations
• Paid or volunteer work experience
• Secondary school marks and academic achievement
• Financial need

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Fill in all information on the Application for Consideration. If more space is required, please attach a separate sheet. Any missing information may result in disqualification of the application. Once applications are submitted, applicants will not be contacted unless successful.

2. Answer completely the essay portion, typed and double-spaced on the questions on page 5 of the application. Separate sheets may be used.

3. Attach a certified academic transcription from your secondary school and any other relevant documentation.

4. If selected, a passport size photograph will be required.

5. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION is October 1 OF EACH YEAR.

Submissions should be couriered, hand delivered or mailed in a sealed envelope to:

The envelope should be clearly marked PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL – SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.

At Awards Ceremony

On Tuesday, April 7, 2009, The CBTU Ontario Canada Chapter was presented with the J.S. Woodwarth Award by the NDP Caucus for its outstanding commitment to advancing the rights of minorities and immigrants, and eliminating racism. The presentation was made at the Legislative Building in Queen’s Park Toronto to Andrea McCormack, 1st Vice-President, who accepted on the CBTU’s behalf. Congratulations to all who made this possible!
